This year, the tournament will take place on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23. 170 teams from countries like the Netherlands, France, Portugal, England, Germany, Italy, Spain, and South Africa will compete in various categories, including youth, seniors, and European top. The matches in Scheveningen will count towards the European Beach Fives Rugby Circuit, whose final will be held in Oporto, Portugal. Beach rugby is a fast-growing sport that is played worldwide and is spectacular to watch. It is played by five players on a smaller field without goalposts. There are no scrums, conversions, or line-outs, and points can only be scored via a try. The scoring system is also different but simpler. Each try is worth one point. And very importantly, after a tackle, the player must release the ball within two seconds. This creates a dynamic game that lasts two times five minutes. It may seem short, but after those ten minutes, most players are completely exhausted. On both days, hundreds of matches will be played at the Beach Stadium near the Noorderhaven-hoofd and the adjacent fields from 09:00 to 18:00. On Sunday afternoon, the finals in the various categories will take place, and the coveted trophies will be awarded. There will also be various side events. For example, rugby international David Weersma will give clinics to children, even to those who are not members of a rugby club and want to try the sport once. The Harde Leerschool, with young people who have a distance to the labor market, will play a match against the renowned South African team, Wild Dogs. And at De Harde Leerschool, one of the Netherlands’ best rugby players of all time, Zeno Kieft, will make an appearance. And there is much more to discover. Interested in getting to know beach rugby? Or do you also think that as a true rugby fan, you should not miss this event? Then come to Scheveningen. The event is free to attend and can be perfectly combined with Vlaggetjesdag on Saturday, for example.
