According to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 6.3% in Q2, down from 8.4% in Q1. This slowdown was mainly attributed to a contraction in the manufacturing sector, which declined by 2.4%. Meanwhile, retail inflation measured by the consumer price index (CPI) eased slightly to 5.3% in August from 5.4% in July. However, it remained above the central bank’s target range of 2-6%. “The slowdown in economic growth is concerning, but we expect it to be temporary,” said Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran. “We are taking steps to boost investment and consumption.” The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised interest rates four times so far this year in an effort to curb inflation.
