Under the current law, sex offenders are required to register with the state for a period of 10 years or life, depending on the severity of their offense. The new law will extend the registration period to life for anyone convicted of a qualifying sex offense. The bill’s sponsor, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), said the new law is necessary to protect the public from dangerous individuals. “Sex offenders pose a serious threat to our communities, and we need to do everything we can to keep them from harming others,” she said.
