De 2 meter lange diagonaal is na een succesvolle periode bij het Duitse SVG Lüneburg teruggekeerd naar Nederland. “Ik ben heel blij dat ik bij Lycurgus kan spelen”, zegt Brilhuis. “Het is een ambitieuze club met een goede staf en een jonge, talentvolle groep spelers. Ik kijk ernaar uit om mijn steentje bij te dragen aan het succes van de ploeg.” Brilhuis staat bekend om zijn harde aanvallen en indrukwekkende blokkeringen. “Ik houd van hard slaan”, verklaart hij. “Ik wil de tegenstander pijn doen met mijn aanvallen en zo veel mogelijk punten scoren.” Over zijn nieuwe trainer Michael Parkinson is Brilhuis enthousiast: “Ik heb veel positieve verhalen over hem gehoord. Hij is een jonge, ambitieuze coach die goed met spelers om kan gaan. Ik ben benieuwd wat hij van ons team kan maken.” Lycurgus hoopt met de komst van Brilhuis een stap te zetten in de strijd om de Nederlandse landstitel. De Groningers eindigden vorig seizoen als tweede achter het ongenaakbare Sliedrecht Sport. “We willen dit seizoen opnieuw meedoen om de prijzen”, aldus Brilhuis. “Ik denk dat we met deze ploeg een goede kans hebben om hoog te eindigen. We hebben een mix van ervaring en jong talent, en de sfeer in de groep is goed.” Brilhuis hoopt ook zijn internationale ambities bij Lycurgus te verwezenlijken. “Ik wil me in de kijker spelen bij het Nederlands team”, zegt hij. “Ik denk dat ik met mijn kwaliteiten een waardevolle aanvulling kan zijn voor Oranje.” De eerste wedstrijd van Lycurgus in de Eredivisie is op 1 oktober tegen SSS Barneveld. Martijn Brilhuis, a 23-year-old volleyball player from the Netherlands, has signed a one-year contract with Lycurgus, a top-flight volleyball team in Groningen, the Netherlands. Brilhuis, a 2.04-meter-tall diagonal hitter, joins Lycurgus after a difficult season with Numidia VC Limax, one of the best teams in the Dutch Eredivisie. Brilhuis, who describes himself as a down-to-earth player who doesn’t shy away from expressing his opinion, says he is excited to play for Lycurgus. “I’m interested in clubs that have ambition, that want to take volleyball in the Netherlands to a higher level,” he says. “That appeals to me, because that’s definitely the case with Lycurgus.” Brilhuis had a tough season at VC Limax last year, missing six weeks due to a broken finger and then struggling with a shoulder injury. He never fully regained his form after that. He is now training at the Papendal National Sports Centre with the Next Generation group of talented young players to get back into shape. Lycurgus General Manager Arjan Taaij says Brilhuis has the potential to be one of the successors to the current diagonals on the Dutch national team. “After two good years at Dynamo as a champion and a less good year at VC Limax, it’s up to him to take a step forward both physically and technically,” Taaij says. “We’re happy to help him with that.” Brilhuis, who hails from Denekamp in the Netherlands, started playing volleyball at the age of nine with DeVoKo in his hometown. “In a village, you usually start playing soccer as a boy,” he says. “I did too. My father played soccer, but my sisters played volleyball and my mother coached. I thought it was fun to play with a volleyball a bit. One thing led to another. Then you start growing, you get tall, and maybe there’s something in it.” Brilhuis went through all the Dutch national youth teams and moved to Talentteam Papendal at the age of 16, where he played for four seasons. He competed in four European Youth Championships. He started out as a middle blocker. “The coaches of the Dutch national teams selected me for that position,” he says. “At Talentteam, I was converted to a diagonal. Passing has never been my strongest point. I like to hit hard.” In 2021, he moved to Dynamo in Apeldoorn, where he won two championships and the Super Cup. He wants to play a lot at Lycurgus. “I really want to make it to the national team,” he says. “They often select players for that team who play abroad, so I definitely want to maximize my chances. On my position in the Dutch national team, I have two top players ahead of me in Nimir Abdel-Aziz and Wouter ter Maat, but I still have time. I’ve already trained with the Orange team, but I’ve never played any minutes. Last year, there might have been a chance, but then I had some bad luck and broke my hand. For now, I want to win prizes with a top club, just like everyone else. I hope for a good season to be able to take steps forward again. I’m going to compete with Stijn van Schie for the diagonal position, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Bij de ploeg van coach Arjan Taaij hoopt de aanvalskanon een volwaardige basisplaats te veroveren. “Ik houd van hard slaan.” De lengte van Brilhuis (2.01 meter) en zijn harde aanvalsslagen hebben hem bij Lycurgus gebracht. “Ik ben gewoon een echte Tukker die van hard slaan houdt”, zegt Brilhuis lachend. “Dat Lycurgus mij heeft vastgelegd, is een erkenning.” De volleybalclub uit Groningen staat te boek als een topclub in de Eredivisie. Het won in zijn bestaan drie keer het landskampioenschap, de laatste titel dateert uit 2014. Nu hunkert Lycurgus naar een nieuw succes. Brilhuis is vastbesloten om in Groningen een vaste basisplaats te veroveren. “Ik wil zo veel mogelijk minuten maken en mezelf bewijzen”, aldus de Tukker. “Ik weet dat de concurrentie groot is, maar dat motiveert mij alleen maar extra.”
